LARGE GROUP SESSIONS

SJN’s Large Group Sessions are social, community gatherings for our children.  The sessions include a variety of activities – prayer, stories, games, crafts & videos – centered on seasonal themes and Christian values.  The sessions are intended to share the good news of Jesus Christ with our children in fun and engaging ways and to show them that they are valued members of our faith community.

SJN staff members, assisted by teen volunteers working toward their Confirmation pre-requisites, develop and run the sessions which all take place in the Parish Hall.  Parents do not need to stay at the church during these sessions (unless they want to!) and there is no additional charge.  These sessions are considered an integral part of your child’s Christian Formation program and we look forward to spending this time with them!

Jr. High School Youth Ministry

Program Overview

This program involves our 6th – 8th grade students in the total life of our parish community with the option of preparing them for the Sacrament of Confirmation.  SJN’s Confirmation preparation begins with our 8th grade religious education program.

GRADES 6 & 7

Education:

Discussion Group topics are taught over several weeks in the traditional class setting

(See next page for programs & schedules.)

Grade 6:  Text book format on the Old Testament

Grade 7:  God’s Revelation, Jesus and the Trinity

Community Building and Service to Others:

Several Faith Commitment opportunities, specifically geared to this age group, are offered throughout the year. 6th and 7th grade students are not required to fulfill a specific number of Faith Commitments, but are encouraged to begin becoming involved in these fun and worthwhile community projects.  The Youth News Monthly (see below) is the best way to view all the opportunities available to you each month.

GRADE 8

Participation in all activities detailed below is required as part of each student’s Confirmation preparation.  If a student fails to complete any of these requirements, he/she must make it/them up the following year.

Education Preparation:

·         1 Scheduled Family Retreat as a class

·         2 Prayer experiences for Advent and Lent

·         3 Scheduled Mini-courses   (Catholic School students are not required to attend these Mini-courses.)

See next page for scheduled dates. Dinner is served at each Mini-course unless noted otherwise.

Community Building and Service to Others:

·         4 Faith Commitments will be done throughout the year

o        Service Projects (i.e., Crop Walk, Blood Drive, Large Group Sessions)

o        Community building Activities (i.e., Parish Cookout, Rockingham Mall Shopping, Ogunquit)

Mass Participation:

·         Participation in 1 Youth Mass – This year each “team” will be scheduled to serve at a Youth Mass.  Students may choose to serve as a Lector, Hospitality Minister or the Cross Bearer; each individual’s role will be determined within their team prior to their Mass.

SJN’s Youth News Monthly, details all Mini-course and Faith Commitment opportunities so students can choose the activities in which they wish to participate.  Information can also be found in the weekly bulletin and online at  http://www.SJNRCC.org
